Robbie and the fisherman

6:00 am with a 40 man crew of fishermen just north of Varkala's main beach.

The 2km long net was set four hours earlier ( 2:00am). The rope these fellows are pulling in has a value of Rs.600,000 or $10,000 US.  The rope is made up of approx. 50 strands of 1/8" nylon. The fishermen receive a percentage of the days catch, which today was around 750 kilo of Lakka fish valued at around Rs 50 per kilo or Rs. 37,500, ( $600.00 US. ).
I am always amazed when comparing what skilled trades earn here. Most of the men seen above and below have several children and a wife to care for and their ages range between 40 years and 60 years old.  A carpenter earns on average Rs. 1000 a day for a 10 hour day. His helper's wages come in at Rs. 600 or $10.00 US.    The fishermen above earn even less.
